Emergency landing after turbulence kills British man on Singapore Airlines flight
Dozens injured after flight SQ321 from London to Singapore hits severe turbulence
A 73-year-old British man has died and dozens of passengers have been injured after a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore hit severe turbulence over the Indian Ocean.
The Boeing 777-300ER flight, SQ321, departed London Heathrow Airport on Monday evening and was due to arrive at Singapore Changi Airport on Tuesday morning.
However, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport after the turbulence caused the plane to descend 6,000 feet in a matter of seconds.
Singapore Airlines said in a statement that the pilot declared a medical emergency and landed in Bangkok after "sudden and severe turbulence".
The airline said that a number of passengers and crew members were injured in the turbulence, and that one passenger, a 73-year-old British man, later died in hospital.
The aviation tracking site FlightRadar24 said that its data showed that the turbulence on the Singapore-bound flight was so severe that it caused the plane to descend at a rate of 3,000 feet per minute.
The Singapore Airlines flight was carrying 228 passengers and 19 crew members. The airline said that all passengers and crew were evacuated safely from the plane.
