Deadly Lightning Strikes Leave 10 Injured
Ten People Injured in Dresden, Germany, After Lightning Strike
Most Lightning Strike Injuries Preventative
A lightning strike in Dresden, Germany, has left ten people injured, with four of them in serious condition. The strike occurred on the banks of the Elbe River on a sunny afternoon, catching people by surprise. Most of the injuries were caused by the electrical current traveling through the ground, a phenomenon known as ground current. While lightning strikes are relatively rare, they can be deadly if proper precautions are not taken.
According to the VDE Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies, lightning strikes can carry currents of up to 100,000 amps. This massive electrical surge can cause severe burns, cardiac arrest, and neurological damage. In Germany, approximately 250 people are struck by lightning each year, with around 10% of those strikes proving fatal.
Lightning safety experts emphasize the importance of seeking shelter during thunderstorms and avoiding open areas, tall trees, and bodies of water. If caught outside, people are advised to crouch low and make themselves as small a target as possible. Buildings with proper lightning protection systems, such as lightning rods and surge protectors, provide the safest refuge from lightning strikes.
