Pavin Smith and the Arizona Diamondbacks Defeat Houston Astros
D-Backs Take Series Opener in Houston
In the first game of a three-game series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Houston Astros, the D-Backs came out on top with a 5-2 victory. Pavin Smith led the way for Arizona, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
The Diamondbacks jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Smith hit a solo home run off Astros starter Luis Garcia. Arizona added another run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Ketel Marte.
Astros Rally Falls Short
The Astros got on the board in the third inning on a solo home run by Yordan Alvarez. They added another run in the fifth inning on a double by Chas McCormick.
But the D-Backs bullpen was able to shut down the Astros offense after that, with Noe Ramirez, Ian Kennedy, and Mark Melancon combining to allow just one hit over the final four innings.
Smith Continues to Impress
Smith has been one of the few bright spots for the Diamondbacks this season. The 25-year-old first baseman is batting .290 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs.
The D-Backs will look to take the series from the Astros when they face off again on Tuesday night.
