Sen. Bob Menendez and Wife Indicted on Bribery Charges
Prosecutors Allege the Couple Accepted Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars in Bribes
Menendez, a Democrat, is up for reelection in 2024
New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife Nadine have been indicted on federal bribery charges. The indictment alleges that the couple accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from a Florida eye doctor named Salomon Melgen.
The bribes allegedly took the form of cash, gold coins and wire transfers. In exchange, Menendez allegedly helped Melgen obtain visas for his foreign girlfriends and arrange for him to receive a lucrative contract from the Dominican Republic government.
The indictment is a blow to Menendez, who has long been one of the most powerful Democrats in Congress. He is currently the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The charges against Menendez and his wife are serious and could carry a significant prison sentence. The case is likely to be closely watched by both Democrats and Republicans, as it could have implications for the upcoming 2024 election.
