20 Separate Fires Merge, Resulting in Evacuation of 10,000 Residents
Wildfires in the Williams Lake region have merged into one massive blaze, covering a devastating 545,151 hectares. As of July 11, over 200 active fires were burning, forcing the evacuation of 4,000 people. Williams Lake remains on evacuation alert.
Lightning Strikes Blamed for Fires
Officials believe a series of lightning strikes sparked the wildfires on July 8, 2017. Strong winds have fanned the flames, causing them to spread rapidly.
Community Protection Efforts
Local fire departments, assisted by the province’s Wildfire Management Branch, are working tirelessly to protect the community of Wildwood, located north of Williams Lake.
